Don't let that good wood go to waste!

That time of year is fast approaching again on the west coast of BC; High winds, rain, snow / sleet and power outages have become a normal expectation for us in the fall season. Often times, trees are knocked over as a result, leaving a bit of a mess to clean up.
In most cases, (from what I can tell,) down trees are typically bucked up into smaller, more manageable sections that left on the ground and forgotten about, or depending on the species of wood, firewood becomes the fate of the poor tree. When left on the wet ground and forgotten about, usually for years, the logs begin to rot and become a habitat for unwanted insects and critters. At some point, the infestation gets so bad, that the property occupant is left with nothing but the burden of getting rid of the completely mouldy and rotted wood. This can be tricky and expensive, but it doesn't need to get to this point!
Penwest Services Inc. can help! We have a Portable Mill service and a crane truck to make life easier for folks that don't have the equipment to deal with this scenario, especially when the down trees are quite large. Whether you have a down tree from a wind storm, or if it was cut down as a preventative measure, it is important to take immediate action if you ever want to harvest it for usable lumber, furniture building or even firewood.
We can come down and mill the log up into live edge slabs, and stack so that the wood properly dries and is ready for use when you need it. This procedure does not take as much time or effort to conduct, so it can be done with a lower initial cost and when enough time has elapsed and you're ready to use your lumber, we can edge and mill it into the desired dimensions, leaving you with a better quality finish.
Our experience has shown that people often decide that they want to complete a project (with the wood from down logs,) and THEN call us in to mill up the lumber. (I never want to argue with a paying customer, I'll just do whatever they request within reason.) The problem with this approach is that the finished cut lumber is not typically given enough time to dry properly, possibly resulting in cracking or warped boards or posts.
So, if you find yourself staring daily at those logs and wondering what to do with that down tree, contact us for a free, no obligation consultation and quote. We will be happy to help!
